week #19 do something kind for someone

flowersI have really struggled to come up with a small change this week. It has been a difficult few days with the puppy and I have to admit that I am suffering a bout of ‘I am sure my dog is worse than Marley‘ induced melancholy (and hands that have evidently been used as a chew toy one too many times). On top of that, I am lagging behind in my studies and feeling rather overwhelmed by life in general. Therefore, all I can really muster this week is something very small. But, hey, that’s what this blog is all about!

We live in a world where everything is ‘me’ centred. This makes putting others first counter-intuitive and, frankly, a rarity. Yet, what a feeling when we know we have made someone’s day! Often we think we have to look far and wide to make a difference in the world but what about the world immediately around us? Yes, there is great need everywhere but there is also great need in our own community if we just take time to watch and listen. Is a friend, work colleague, family member or neighbour going through a hard time? There will always be people around us who could do with encouragement and once in a while I would like to be the one who gives it to them.

I know this all sounds rather Pollyanna-like but what I am proposing this week is to do something kind for someone. If I can do it anonymously, even better. It should be something unexpected and not necessarily life-changing; just a small gesture that will brighten their day and let them know that someone is thinking of them. It could be a little note through the post, buying an item that I know they have been wanting or just a phone call to check how they are doing. Nothing spectacular, just a small token that says, ‘Hey, someone cares’.

So, I might be having a bad week but it is times like this when it is most important to look outward and think of those around me.
